Black Out Periods
Fall Black Out Period
The majority of coverage periods begin September 1 of the current school year. However, there is a Blackout Period for about two months at the beginning of the policy year (approximately September 1 to October 31). During this time, the insurance companies are not able to confirm coverage. They will not reimburse the claims of students who were not covered by the Plan up to the end of the previous policy year.
Students who were covered by the Plan up to the end of the previous policy year are not affected by the Fall Blackout Period.
Students who were registered for classes by early August will experience a shorter Blackout Period.
Any expenses incurred during this time can be claimed for after the Blackout Period, so long as the student is eligible for coverage.
Winter Black Out Period
There is also a Blackout Period that affects new winter students beginning school in January. The Winter Blackout Period lasts about two months (approximately January 1 to February 28). During this time, the insurance companies will not reimburse claims for new students. This is because they cannot confirm your coverage.
If you get dental work done during this Blackout Period, just keep all receipts from your dental visit. You can process the claim after the Blackout Period ends, so long as you are eligible for coverage.
Students who were already enrolled in the fall are not affected by the Winter Blackout Period.
Please note: The Blackout Period mainly applies to new students who are members of Queen’s University.

What Are Common Problems with Studentcare?
While Studentcare provides valuable dental benefits for students, like any insurance provider, there may be some common issues or challenges that students could encounter. It is essential to be aware of these potential problems to make informed decisions about your dental coverage. Here are some of the common problems that students may face with Studentcare:
- Limited Coverage Options: Depending on your educational institution’s agreement with Studentcare, the available dental coverage plans may vary. Some students may find that certain specific treatments or procedures they require are not fully covered or may have limited coverage under their chosen plan.
- Out-of-Network Services: While Studentcare encourages using dentists within its network for optimal coverage, there might be situations where students prefer or need to seek dental care from a dentist outside of the network. In such cases, the coverage may differ, and the reimbursement process might be more complicated.
- Claim Processing Delays: Although Studentcare aims to simplify the claim process, delays in processing claims could occur. This might lead to unexpected expenses if a student needs to pay upfront for dental services and waits for reimbursement from Studentcare.
- Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusions: Like many insurance plans, Studentcare dental coverage might have limitations regarding pre-existing dental conditions. Some dental issues that existed before enrolling in the plan may not be covered until after a waiting period or may have limited coverage.
- Coverage Periods and Renewals: The duration of coverage may align with the academic year, meaning that the coverage might expire at the end of the semester or academic term. Students need to be aware of when their coverage ends and ensure timely renewals to maintain continuous access to dental benefits.
- Communication and Information: Sometimes, students may encounter challenges with communication or accessing relevant information regarding their coverage. It is essential to stay informed about any changes in benefits, network providers, or procedures to optimize the use of Studentcare.
- Coordination with Other Insurance: Students who have additional insurance coverage, such as through their parents or part-time jobs, may face coordination issues between multiple insurance plans. Understanding how Studentcare coordinates with other insurance providers can prevent confusion during claims.
- Limited Coverage During School Breaks: Depending on the specific policy, students may experience limitations in coverage during school breaks, especially if they are not enrolled in summer classes or take an extended leave of absence.
- Appeals and Disputes: If there are disagreements regarding claim decisions or coverage interpretations, students may need to go through an appeals process to resolve the issue. This process can sometimes be time-consuming and challenging to navigate.
- Understanding Policy Terms: Like any insurance policy, Studentcare’s dental coverage may have specific terms and conditions that students need to understand fully. Misinterpretation or lack of awareness of policy details could lead to unexpected expenses.
It is essential for students to carefully review the details of their Studentcare dental plan, including the coverage offered, limitations, and procedures for making claims. If any uncertainties arise, reaching out to Studentcare’s customer service or the student services office at the educational institution can provide valuable clarification. If you have further questions about Studentcare, please contact us.
