What You Should Do After Your Dental Sedation Appointment For A Successful Recovery

After your dental sedation appointment—whether you received laughing gas (nitrous oxide), oral sedation, or IV sedation—following post-visit instructions is crucial for a safe and smooth recovery. Sedation dentistry can make dental procedures more comfortable, especially for anxious patients, but taking the right steps afterward will ensure the best outcome.

Transportation and Support

  • Arrange a Ride Home: A responsible adult should drive you home and stay with you for several hours after your appointment. The effects of sedation can last from 2 to 6 hours, so do not plan on driving or traveling alone.
  • Avoid Staircases: If possible, stay on the ground floor until you feel fully alert. Always have someone assist you if you need to go up or down stairs.

Eating and Drinking

  • Stay Hydrated: While there are no restrictions on eating after your appointment, staying hydrated is important. Drink plenty of fluids to support recovery.

Medication Instructions

  • Resume Normal Medications: Unless advised otherwise by your dentist or doctor, you can continue taking your usual medications. Let your dentist know about any recent changes in your medication or health status.
  • Avoid Additional Sedatives or Stimulants: For at least 24 hours, avoid consuming sedatives, alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine to prevent potential interactions with the sedatives used during your visit.

Work and Daily Activities

  • Hold Off on Major Decisions: Sedatives can affect your judgment, so avoid making important business decisions or signing legal documents for at least 24 hours.
