Fluoride Trays Post-Insertion Instructions
What You Should Do After Receiving Your Fluoride Trays
A Fluoride Tray is a custom fitted dental device used to apply fluoride treatment to the teeth. It is important to follow these post-visit instructions to ensure a successful fluoride tray experience.
Food
- Avoid consuming highly acidic foods and beverages such as citrus fruits, citrus juices, vinegar, soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks. Acidic substances can weaken the enamel, and the combination of fluoride and acidity may lead to enamel erosion and cavities.
- Do not eat food with your fluoride trays on.
Instructions For Use
Using fluoride trays is a simple and effective way to apply fluoride treatment to your teeth. Here are general instructions for proper use:
- Brush and floss your teeth: Before using the fluoride trays, make sure to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly to remove any food particles and plaque.
- Apply fluoride gel: Place a small amount of fluoride gel or foam into each compartment of the fluoride tray. The gel should be fluoride-based and prescribed or recommended by your dentist. We recommend X-PUR NaF Gel. Use a pea-sized amount of gel for each tray.
- Insert the trays: Carefully insert the fluoride trays into your mouth. Ensure they cover all your teeth and fit snugly. Gently bite down on the trays to hold them in place. Follow the recommended wearing time provided by the instructions on the bottle. X-PUR NaF Gel is recommended to be worn over teeth for 5-10 minutes.
- Spit out excess gel: After the recommended time has elapsed, remove the fluoride trays from your mouth. Spit out any remaining fluoride gel, but avoid rinsing, eating, or drinking for at least 30 minutes to allow the fluoride to be absorbed by your teeth.
- Cleaning the trays: Rinse the fluoride trays thoroughly with water after each use to remove any remaining fluoride gel. You can also use a soft toothbrush to gently clean the trays. Store them in their case, open to dry. If the fluoride trays starts to smell, you may immerse them in a solution of vinegar or denture cleanser. We recommend that you clean it using an ultrasonic cleaner, such as the Debatlog Ultrasonic Cleaner in a Polident Daily Denture Cleaner solution.
- Follow-up visits: Regularly schedule follow-up appointments with your dentist or dental professional to monitor your oral health progress and determine if any adjustments are necessary to your fluoride treatment plan.
Always follow the specific instructions provided by your dentist or dental professional, as they may tailor the treatment based on your individual oral health needs. If you experience any adverse reactions or have concerns while using the fluoride trays, contact your dentist promptly.
Oral Hygiene
- Keeping Your Fluoride Trays Clean: To keep your fluoride trays free of biofilm accumulation, we recommend that you clean it using an ultrasonic cleaner, such as the Debatlog Ultrasonic Cleaner in a Polident Daily Denture Cleaner solution.
- Brush At Least Twice A Day: Conventional wisdom says that you should brush at least twice a day; once in the morning and once before you go to bed. Two times a day is a good rule of thumb. But ideally, you should brush right after a meal. This is to maximize the amount of time your teeth stay clean between meals.
- When You Cannot Brush Your Teeth, Rinse With Water Or Mouthwash: It is sometimes not practical to be brushing after every meal. You may be busy at work or at school during your day and cannot find time to brush or floss. If this is the case, at least rinse with water or mouthwash to get as much food debris and taste out of your mouth. This will help prevent new cavities. One brand of mouthwash that we highly recommend is Crest Pro-Health Densify Anticavity Fluoride Mouth Rinse.
- Consider Upgrading Your Toothbrush: Ensure you are using a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your teeth, as they are gentler on the tooth and less likely to cause damage or irritation to the gum tissue around it. One brand of toothbrush that we highly recommend is the Curaprox CS5460 Ultra Soft Swiss Toothbrush. Also consider upgrading to an electric toothbrush, which can be more effective at removing plaque and bacteria around your teeth and gums. One brand of electric toothbrush that we highly recommend is the Philips Sonicare Protectiveclean 6100.
- Floss Daily: Flossing is critical to remove plaque and food particles that may accumulate around your teeth and gums. Ideally you should be flossing every time you brush, but once a day is the bare minimum. We recommend GUM ButlerWeave Dental Floss. If you have difficulty using regular string floss, consider using dental flossers (such as Sunstar 888JC GUM Advanced Care Flossers) or interdental brushes (GUM Proxabrush) to clean the space between the teeth and gums.
- Buy A Water Flosser: We highly recommend you purchase a Water Flosser and to use it daily in addition to regular flossing; the Water Flosser will flush out debris missed by floss and toothbrush. Ideally you should be water flossing every time you brush, but once a day is the bare minimum. One brand that we highly recommend is the Waterpik Aquarius Water Flosser
- Use An Anticavity Antibacterial Mouthwash Daily: Rinse your mouth with a high fluoride, anticavity mouthwash specially formulated to reduce the risk of cavities forming around teeth and gums and to freshen your breath. Ideally you should be rinsing with mouthwash every time you brush, but once a day is the bare minimum. One brand of mouthwash that we highly recommend is Crest Pro-Health Densify Anticavity Fluoride Mouth Rinse.
- Use An Anticavity Toothpaste: Be sure to use a toothpaste that has a unique formula that is high fluoride and will minimize the risk of new cavities forming around your teeth and gums, and promote gum health. One brand that we highly recommend is the Colgate PreviDent 5000 ppm Booster Plus Toothpaste.
